Tema della mostra è una reinterpretazione dell’identità all’insegna di mitologie da pop culture, di improbabili sogni giovanili e non, di talenti latenti e di immaginari personalissimi: come saremmo se non fossimo quel che siamo, ma se invece avessimo realizzato il sogno di diventare una star?
Karin Andersen ha invitato alcuni artisti a rispondere ai seguenti quesiti: “se fossi un musicista, che tipo o genere di musica faresti? Come ti chiameresti? Quale sarebbe l’estetica delle tue uscite discografiche e il look con cui ti presenteresti al tuo pubblico?”, e a elaborare copertine di CD, flyers, locandine, gadgets e ogni altro tipo di oggetto-feticcio utile a illustrare il gioco della reinvenzione di se stessi sotto forma di alter ego musicale. Tutto il materiale della mostra è rigorosamente falso. Anche gli artisti attivi nel campo della musica hanno dovuto rivedersi in base all’idolo che avrebbero voluto diventare, portando alla luce la propria vena trash, l’inconfessato amore per la musica country, tirando fuori dai cassetti i gadget heavy metal tenuti nascosti, le proprie fantasie sulla musica classica e contemporanea, o anche la voce da mezzosoprano che finora si era sentita soltanto tra le piastrelle della propria doccia. Mind Games è la più recente tappa di AURAL ScULPTURE(S), un work in progress itinerante ideato da Karin Andersen e Michele Mariano, curato da Edoardo Bridda e Christian Rainer. Il progetto nasce dall’incipit di una prima mostra di sole copertine di CD finte organizzata da Karin per la galleria bolognese Il Campo delle Fragole nel 1996. Quest’ultima special edition realizzata per la Galleria Marconi amplia l’archivio itinerante dei musicisti finti con lavori inediti di 29 artisti italiani e stranieri. Testi in catalogo di Edoardo Bridda e Andreas Flevin. The theme of the show is a reinterpretation of identity according to pop culture mythologies, improbable dreams of our youth (and not only), latent talents and very personal imaginaries: how could we be if we weren’t what we are, if we had, on the contrary, realized the dream to become a star?
Karin Andersen has invited the partecipating artists to answer to the following questions: “if you were a musician, what kind of music would you play? What would your name be? What about the look of your records, and the way you would present yourself to the audience?” and to create CD covers, flyers, posters, gadgets and any other fetish-object that might illustrate the mind-game of reinventing oneself as a musical alter ego. All the exhibition material is absolutely fake. Even the artists who are active in the music scene as well had to reinvent themselves according to the idol they would have wanted to become, revealing their own trash inspiration or their unconfessed love for country music, taking their hidden heavy metal gadgets out of their drawers, displaying their own imaginations about classic and contemporary music or even the mezzo soprano voice which up to now could be heard only in the shower. Mind Games is the latest event of AURAL ScULPTURE(S), a mobile work in progress organized by Karin Andersen and Michele Mariano, curated by Edoardo Bridda and Christian Rainer. The project started with a first exhibition of fake CD covers, planned and organized by Karin for “Il Campo delle Fragole” Gallery of Bologna in 1996. This latest special edition realized for Marconi Gallery features new works by 29 italian and foreign artists, and presentation texts by Edoardo Bridda and Andreas Flevin.
